Dear parents and guardians, over the last week in class we have been exploring and discussing the issue over the proposed Islamic Center two blocks from Ground Zero. Students have been investigating this subject by reading newspaper articles, watching political debates and participating in class discussions. We have also taken the opportunity to tie in the United States Constitution (Bill of Rights) and attempted to tackle the very difficult concept of separation of church and state. This will not be the last time we learn and discuss the United States Constitution in the classroom setting.
Students are now being asked to take a side in this heated political debate and are in the process of composing a four paragraph essay in class. Students are working very hard to take the ideas from notes, graphic organizers and make their thoughts come to life in the written form. I look forward to reading these
first writing samples and will grade accordingly.
