Antebellum America

Antebellum is Latin word that translates to mean before the war. The American Civil War (1861-1865) was a war that consumed many American lives and held the attention of the world. This sectional conflict (North vs. South) had its start in the creation of the Constitution and the failings of the founders to settle the issue of slavery. The time period before the war marked a series of compromises between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in the country of the United States of America. These series of compromises put off the war but eventually the two sides were headed for blows and the nation found itself in one of the worst time periods in American History. Also a greater faction was citizens that did not want to end slavery in the southern states in America, but demanded that slavery not expand into newly acquired territories in the western part of the United States of America.

Over the next two and a half weeks we will learn about this time period before the American Civil War and I have already posted the study guide for our upcoming test! (January 18th)
