Historical Myth Busting

Starting this Thursday 8/29 our class started a mini-project looking at certain people and/or events in history considered possibly to be mythical or lacking in historical accuracy. Students are working collaboratively to investigate the real "truth" by reading certain articles to learn more about an event or person that will lead to a greater classroom discussion where they will report their findings to the class. The ultimate goals are for students to challenge the accepted truth of history by digging deeper in order to come to a greater understanding of history, politics, geography and sociology. The people and events we will investigate include:

1. Did Pocahontas really save John Smith’s life, and then fall in love with him?

2. Did Betsy Ross sew the first American flag?

3. Was Paul Revere the only one responsible for warning people the British were coming? And did he really say “the British are coming”?

4. Should we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th? Why or why not?  Should Thomas Jefferson be given sole credit for being the author of this important historical document?

5. Did Lee Harvey Oswald act alone in killing John F. Kennedy in 1963?

6. Was Columbus the first to discover America?  If not, then who was?

7. What really happened at the Boston Massacre and who was at fault?

8. Did Franklin D. Roosevelt have prior knowledge of the Japanese plans to bomb Pearl Harbor, Hawaii?

9. What was really celebrated at the first Thanksgiving?
