Historical Myth Busting

This week (August 30th) our class started a mini-project looking at certain people and/or events in history considered possibly to be mythical or lacking in historical accuracy. Students are working collaboratively to investigate the real "truth" by reading certain articles to learn more about an event or person that will lead to a classroom discussion where they will report their findings to the class. The ultimate goals are for students to challenge the accepted truth of history by digging deeper in order to come to a greater understanding of history, politics, geography and sociology. The people and events we will investigate include:

1. Did Pocahontas really save John Smith’s life, and then fall in love with him? How accurate was the 1995 Disney movie concerning the life of Pocahontas?

2. Did Betsy Ross sew the first American flag?

3. Was Paul Revere the only one responsible for warning the citizens of Massachusetts that the British were coming? And did he really say “the British are coming”?

4. Should we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th? Why or why not?

5. Could Lewis and Clark have made their expedition westward without Sacagawea?

6. Did Christopher Columbus first discover America?

7. What really happened at the Boston Massacre and who was at fault?

8. What really happened to the Lost Colony at Roanoke, North Carolina?

9. Was Blackbeard really the rough and tumble character of the 1700s?
